41 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we'd call "indie," and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here's a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.

COLA - "WATER TABLE"

"'Water Table' came from some experiments with bass chords," says Cola's Ben Stidworthy. "The guitar parts of the verse was an attempt to write something Tim would come up with and basically wrote itself. The guitar in the chorus was originally a harp sample played on a keyboard, which is why the working title was Dark Harp. It was the last song I wrote for the record at a moment when we were pretty sure what would end up on the record. I felt like the record needed the emotional note of a song like Water Table and the track flowed out of me. Tim sent it back to me with lyrics the next day so I knew it was gonna work." Cola, the trio featuring Stidworthy and Tim Darcy who were in Ought, release their debut album on May 20.

SUNFLOWER BEAN - I DON'T HAVE CONTROL SOMETIMES

NYC trio Sunflower Bean are back with new album Headfull of Sugar in May, and they've just released this catchy new single and (funny) video. “I’ve always thought that my reckless side was both a gift and a curse, leading me to my best choices on stage but my worst choices in life,” says Julia Cumming of the song's inspiration. “I don’t have control sometimes is the admission, acceptance, and almost celebration of the parts of yourself that are impulsive or maybe even insane.”

--

FROG EYES - "RAINBOW STEW"

"'Rainbow Stew' doesn't unpack as cleanly, in terms of a personal narrative, as the two other songs we've released for The Bees," says Frog Eyes frontman Casey Mercer, "but it is representative of one of the five kinds of songs that I can write — usually this type comes at the end of the writing process, when I have a sense of the shape and weight of the record. These songs come really fast — I think I wrote this song in 5 minutes — and they serve a contrasting purpose. I remember in (the 3 months that I attended) painting school, learning about Cezanne's White Pipe, how it livens the paintings, and also intensifies the gloom in the corners. 'Rainbow Stew' lightens the whole affair, and allows the dense haze of other songs their own beauty. These songs are the ones I personally cherish the most." Frog Eyes' new album, The Bees, is out April 29 via Paper Bag Records.

--

When we were young and just happening to be searching for something new, that's when those early Ride EPs just started trickling into our orbit. We are all total RIDE-heads and even more specifically for us guitarists in the band, Andy fans. Loved Hurricane #1, loved Oasis more with him than without him, love his solo work, love Glok...any and all of it! Dream come true.”

"Antonia was able to say what needed to be said, and when that happens there's isn't room for anything else. I just kept repeating this simple musical idea and she used the space and time to spontaneously express what you hear when you truly listen. 'I just want to live it like it is.'"
