Actor Danny Trejo is addressing the speculation and criticism surrounding his participation in the Daily Wire’s upcoming film, Pawn Shop. The project, which has been described by the studio as a pro-ICE production, has sparked significant debate, prompting the veteran actor to clarify his personal stance.
In a recent conversation with TMZ, Trejo emphasized his identity and values, stating, “I am a proud Mexican who has always been and will always be a supporter of my community. I am also obviously pro-immigrant. I am not pro-ICE.”
The Spy Kids star explained that his decision to join the project was rooted in his professional commitment to storytelling rather than an endorsement of the film's political themes. “I know where I come from and I know our struggles,” Trejo noted. “I am an actor. My job is to tell a story.”
According to reports, the film centers on a federal agent who seeks refuge in a Minneapolis pawn shop during civil unrest related to immigration enforcement. Sources close to the production indicated that Trejo was drawn to the script specifically because of its depiction of a Latino pawn shop owner who is also a military veteran, viewing it as a positive representation of that character archetype.
The production of Pawn Shop has faced various challenges beyond casting controversies. Filming, which is currently taking place in Livingston, Montana, was briefly halted earlier this month following complaints from local residents regarding the production's impact on a community food bank and concerns over safety protocols during stunt sequences. Daily Wire co-founder Ben Shapiro has publicly defended the project, characterizing the production delays as “content discrimination” and a violation of First Amendment rights.
