Rock legends Aerosmith have officially returned to the stage, marking their first live performances in three years with a pair of high-profile shows at the Hollywood Bowl in California. The events, billed as ‘California, Dream On: Aerosmith & Friends,’ took place on October 29 and November 1, signaling a significant moment for the band following their decision to retire from touring due to frontman Steven Tyler’s vocal injury.
The atmosphere was electric as the band was introduced by Liv Tyler and Alicia Silverstone, who famously starred in the band’s 1994 music video for ‘Crazy.’ The setlist featured iconic tracks including ‘Toys in the Attic,’ ‘Back in the Saddle,’ and ‘Dream On.’ Notably, Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters joined the band on drums for the majority of the performance, adding a powerful layer to the legendary group's sound.
The guest list for the two-night residency was extensive. Johnny Depp made a surprise appearance to play guitar on ‘The Train Kept A-Rollin’, while original drummer Joey Kramer reunited with his bandmates for a climactic performance of ‘Walk This Way.’ The support lineup was equally impressive, featuring sets from The Black Crowes and Guns N’ Roses, alongside guest appearances from artists like Tom Morello, Lzzy Hale, and Jerry Cantrell.
While comedian Bill Burr, serving as the event's MC, initially suggested these would be the band's final shows, Steven Tyler appeared to push back against the finality of the statement during the second night. Addressing the crowd, Tyler remarked, “Doesn’t he know that you can’t get rid of Aerosmith? In fact, at the end of the fucking world, there will only be cockroaches, Aerosmith, and, I guess, Bill Burr.”
The return of the band serves as a testament to their enduring legacy in rock music. Despite the challenges posed by recent health setbacks, the energy displayed at the Hollywood Bowl suggests that the spirit of the band remains as vibrant as ever.
