Love is a terrifying, beautiful thing.
On the one hand, it's the most powerful feeling in the whole world. The kind that makes you want to give up everything in order to physically, emotionally, and intellectually devote yourself to another human being, no matter the cost. The kind that makes you want to strive to be a better person, to cease acting on selfish desires, to stop putting yourself first.
On the other, it's voluntarily giving someone the capacity to completely and utterly destroy you. To take away your freedom, and all that comes with it. To leave you a shadow of the individual you once were.
It's this darker side of love Sophia Gripari comes to terms with on best new indie pop cut “Lie to Me.”
After so much pain and hurt, sometimes it's easier to put your heart in a cast-iron cage and throw away the key. Of course, in doing so, you're locking yourself up, denying yourself access to one of life's most fulfilling experiences.
It's this conundrum Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Sophia Gripari mulls over on her latest single “Lie to Me” – a golden-hued piece of acoustic-pop about the fear of love and the crippling effects this can have on your closest relationships. “I'm a little scared of catching feelings,” states Sophia at the top of the track, immediately getting to the chewy heart of the matter. “Guess that you could blame it on some feelings that I had before.”
“The song is about a moment in a relationship when the other person begins complicating what was once simple and easy, with stronger feelings that have damaged you in the past,” says Sophia of the inspiration behind the “Lie to Me” – half of the proceeds from which will be donated to the brilliant Color of Change. “It's about just asking the person you enjoy being with to keep things lighthearted because you know you might not be able to put yourself back together again when you fall apart.”

If you heard Sophia's previous offering “Hate You but I Don't,” then you'll already know this London-born pop wonder isn't afraid of tackling nuanced subject matters, free of easy answers. That doesn't mean her music isn't a total joy to listen to, but We Are: The Guard recommends you approach “Lie to Me” with caution.
After all, if you're not careful, you might just fall in love.
