Captain Mustache on ‘Colors,’ touring life, and plans for the future

Hailing from the heart of Paris, Captain Mustache has rapidly ascended the ranks of the global electronic scene since his emergence in 2020. Defined by a signature sound that is both romantic and burlesque, his music draws deep inspiration from space disco pioneers, Detroit techno, and the energy of electroclash. This unique sonic identity has led to collaborations with undisputed icons like Dave Clarke, Arnaud Rebotini, and Keith Tucker (AUX88), adding a distinct vocal dimension to his work. After reaching a major milestone in 2023 with ‘The Super Album’ on the legendary Kompakt Records, he continued to further his legacy with the release of ‘LUZ’ on Berlin’s esteemed Mobilee label.

Captain Mustache’s trajectory is marked by consistent support from the industry’s elite, with his tracks becoming staples in the sets of Pete Tong, David Guetta, and the late Andrew Weatherall. From the viral success of ‘Everything’ to the high-profile collaboration ‘Bleu Cobalt’ with John Digweed, his discography reflects a producer at the top of his game. Now living out his childhood dream, he has taken his high-energy performances worldwide, touring through the USA, Mexico, Bahrain, and across Europe. With a growing list of accolades and a relentless creative drive, he is proving that “Mustache is the future.”

We had a chat with Captain Mustache about his upcoming release, ‘Colors’ on Mélopée Records, touring life, and upcoming plans.

EG: Hi, Captain! Welcome back to EG. It’s a pleasure to have you here with us, as always. How have you been doing? How did you kickstart your year?

Captain Mustache: I’m doing great, thank you! I started the year optimistically, with many projects planned, including the release of ‘Colors’ on Mélopée.

EG: Congratulations on the release of your new Mélopée Records single, ‘Colors’! How are you feeling about this one? What has the initial reception been like so far?

Captain Mustache: Glad you like it! I feel it’s going to be a great release. Philippe from Mélopée is a friend, and I think this track perfectly fits the “clair” identity of the label.

EG: What can you tell us about ‘Colors’, musically speaking? What was it about the track that inspired you to call it ‘Colors’?

Captain Mustache: ‘Colors’ is a song that reflects me well. It’s optimistic, with a catchy melody, space synth pads, and a pure TR-707 rhythm. Absolute Mustache 🙂

There are some retro influences, reminding me of beautiful moments in life. When you listen to it, I think you understand well why it’s called ‘Colors.’

EG: What made you think about Mélopée Records for this release? How do you feel about “spearheading” the CLAIR side of Mélopée in this new phase for the label?

Captain Mustache: Philippe told me about this project and asked me to be a part of it. He booked me for a party in Lyon, and it all happened quite naturally. We already worked together in the past, with a remix I made on Mélopée in 2023. So it was an easy affair.

EG: Recently, you had the chance to headline the ‘Happy Children’ event series, invited by Mélopée Records. What was that experience like?

Captain Mustache: It was super. I love touring as a DJ and playing in front of the Mélopée audience; the crowd was really receptive. It’s a lovely memory.

EG: Reflecting on 2025, you had a most intense year. What are some of your thoughts on the progress you’ve made as an artist?

Captain Mustache: Indeed, there was my album ‘LUZ’ on Mobilee Records, and a few singles on DGTL, Local Suicide’s Iptamenos Discos, and Sian’s Octopus Recordings. I’d say I’m moving towards a more dancefloor-oriented, DJ-friendly sound.

EG: How would you describe the actual state of the French scene, beyond the well-known “French Touch” circuit?

Captain Mustache: To be honest, I don’t really know. My music is more recognized beyond borders. I don’t play much in Paris, and therefore I don’t feel included in any local scene. Although I’ve been inspired by many great French artists, such as Daft Punk, Vitalic, The Hacker, Mr. Oizo, among others.

EG: Now, given your experience in our scene, what are some of the biggest challenges artists will face in the near future? Is there any piece of advice you have for your colleagues in that sense?

Captain Mustache: The only way to make a living from music is to tour. And to get booked, you need a strong presence on social media. Talent isn’t everything; it’s a combination of factors that need to be considered. Whether we like it or not, that’s today’s reality, and we have to deal with it.

EG: What’s next for Captain Mustache? What milestones are you looking forward to now? Where can your fans catch you next?

Captain Mustache: After the release of ‘Colors’ on Mélopée, a new album is planned on my favorite label ever. It was kind of the ultimate goal, a dream coming true. A tour will start in May, follow me on socials to keep updated 😉

EG: Thank you so much for your time, Captain Mustache! We wish you all the best in the future. Take care!

Captain Mustache: Thank you, Electronic Groove, for your constant support. It’s rare and precious to me, and I truly appreciate it. All the best!
