Coco (mems Dirty Projectors, Pavo Pavo, Lucius) announce 2nd LP & 2024 tour, share “Mythological Man”

NYC trio Coco have been around the block, with Maia Friedman, Oliver Hill, and Dan Molad having spent time over the years in Dirty Projectors, Pavo Pavo and Lucius, respectively. The band released their debut album in 2021 and will return with its follow-up, simply titled 2, on March 1 via First City Artists. The recorded it in part in Richmond with producer Adrian Olsen (Lucy Dacus, Fruit Bats, Bedouine), as well as self-produced sessions in Joshua Tree.

“When we started, we were all either single or in old relationships, living in different places, with different haircuts, priorities and perspectives,” Coco say. “Though it’s only been a few years, the band has seen us through fundamental transformations in each of our lives, which we are fortunate enough to process together.”

The first single from 2 is “Mythological Man,” a lush piece of sophistipop with just a little twang. “This song sprang from nothing while we were cooking dinner in Joshua Tree,” the band says. “Danny was playing a little eight-note tongue twister on the piano, and we were joking about a familiar archetype: the man who projects consummate togetherness. He carefully self-curates and jumps through all the proper hoops to receive affirmation, but his deepest desire, companionship, is tragically elusive. With delight we realized that the piano melody mapped neatly onto the lyric ‘see the mythological man,’ and the rest of the story and music quickly snowballed.” You can watch the video, which Coco wrote and directed, below.

Coco have also announced a spring 2024 tour that includes a Brooklyn show at Baby’s All Right on April 13. All dates are listed below.
