director Joel Schumacher (‘The Lost Boys,’ ‘St. Elmo’s Fire’), RIP - Pop It Records

Filmmaker Joel Schumacher has died in New York City after a year-long battle with cancer, reports Variety. He was 80.

Born and raised in NYC, Joel Schumacher was originally a costume designer, having worked on such films as The Last of Sheila and Woody Allen's Sleeper and Interiors. He wrote the screenplay for 1976 cult film Car Wash and the big screen adaptation of The Wiz before making his feature directorial debut with 1981's The Incredible Shrinking Woman.

Schumacher would go on to be one of the most successful directors of the '80s and '90s, bringing a distinctive pop style to such films as St. Elmo's Fire, The Lost Boys, Flatliners, and Falling Down. He directed two hit John Grisham adaptations (The Client, A Time to Kill), two Batman films (including the critically trounced Batman & Robin with George Clooney), and the big screen version of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera.

In addition to movies, Joel also directed a few music videos, including Seal's "Kiss from a Rose" (from the Batman Forever soundtrack), and INXS' "Devil Inside." Watch those videos and a clip from The Lost Boys below.
