Grimes has said she was recently diagnosed with ADHD and autism, and has explained why she is glad she did not find out earlier.
The Canadian alt-pop musician revealed the news in a post on X on Friday (March 21), writing: “Got diagnosed w adhd/autism this year and realized I’m prob dyslexic which is why I can’t spell at all without spellcheck.”
She went on to say that if she had been diagnosed as a child, it would have resulted in her working “less hard” and might have paved the way for her to taking drugs. “So many of the weird obsessions and motivations I had would have been seen as pathological and I could have written off certain things that were very hard for me, but I’m glad I over came them,” she wrote. “Prob wud have been drugged too.”
She explained that she believes there is a “subculture” of online accounts posing as mental health aids but are, in her view, “extreme biohazards”. She raised her concern that people are now “self diagnosing” with mental health conditions, adding: “I feel a huge percentage of adhd is screen addiction and dopaminergic burn out.”
I have to say, there's this subculture of I guess "mental health" accounts that I actually think are like, extreme infohazards.

“My adhd symptoms were infinitely worse when I wasn’t an avid reader,” she continued. “An adhd account trying to pathologize one of the best things a child can do to help with adhd (and also become an auto didact and knowledgeable person etc etc) is so dark.”
“I think the nature of this uninformed social media mental health subculture is rly a big concern. Some are great ofc but a lot of these seem like explicitly anti civilizational and geared towards making people worse.”

Elsewhere, Grimes recently said she has “begged” her ex-partner Elon Musk to keep her children out of the public eye. The two split in 2021, but they share three children, one of whom Musk paraded around the Oval Office in the White House in his role as the leader of the Department of Government Efficiency.
“I unfortunately do not control the internet and cannot wipe this from the internet,” she said. “I have tried begging the public and my kids’ dad to keep them offline, and I’ve tried legal recourse.”
“The state of my children’s lives being public is of grave concern to me and I think about how to solve this every day. It’s insane to me that there’s no way to deal with this. I would hope there was some law that would allow a parent to veto small children from living public lives but I don’t even trust the law to help me now if I tried to invoke it tbh.”
She has also spoken about her wish that there was “a less toxic vibe” to certain sections of her fanbase online.
