Hot Chip announce new LP ‘Freakout:Release’, share “Down” video

Hot Chip have announced their eighth album, Freakout:Release, which will be out August 19 via Domino. They made it at their new Relax & Enjoy Studio in East London that Al Doyle put together before and during the first year of the Covid. It's also the first time Hot Chip have started a record together with all five members involved.

The album was partially inspired by their cover of their cover of Beastie Boys' "Sabotage" which became a live staple since their last album, A Bath Full of Ecstacy. “By the time we were able to be back together, we were turning on a tap and having a lot of ideas being poured out quite quickly” adds Alexis Taylor. Joe Goddard describes the creative plan of attack as creating “In a natural way, without too much discussion or a grand plan.” Adds Al Doyle, speaking of their new studio, “Everything’s on all the time, and it’s very easy to capture what we’re doing.”

The album features appearances by Cadence Weapon, Lou Hayter and Soulwax. The album artwork was designed by Gang Gang Dance's Brian DeGraw.

The first single is "Down," which is based around a sample of Universal Togetherness Band’s “More Than Enough" and was the first song they worked on for the album. Even with the prominent sample, the song really does have a live energy to it. You can watch the video, which was co-directed by former JAMC bassist Douglass Hart and Pulp's Steve Mackey, below.

Hot Chip just played Coachella, and are touring around the festival, including a NYC show at Avant Gardner on May 10 with LA Priest. All dates are listed below.
