As mentioned, Elliott Smith's classic 1995 self-titled sophomore album is getting a 25th anniversary reissue on August 28 via Kill Rock Stars, and it's coming packaged with a live album recorded on September 17, 1994 at Portland’s Umbra Penumbra, which is apparently the earliest known recording of Elliott performing entirely solo. The version of "Big Decision" from the live album was recently released, and today the label put out the live recording of "Some Song" (a b-side to the "Needle in the Hay" single). It's a genuinely devastating rendition of the song, as you can hear for yourself below.
Several artists are also releasing Elliott Smith covers in conjunction with this reissue. Califone recently released a "Needle in the Hay" cover, and there are forthcoming covers from Bonny Light Horseman, Marisa Anderson, MAITA, Prateek Kuhad, and more.
