Joni Mitchell's 1971 masterpiece Blue turns 50 this week, and to celebrate, she's got a few things in the works. Today she released Blue 50 (Demos & Outtakes) which includes alternate takes of “River” and “Urge for Going,” demos for “California” and “A Case of You” with slightly different lyrics, and “Hunter,” that was previously only released on live album Amchitka, the 1970 Greenpeace benefit Mitchell played with James Taylor in Vancouver. You can listen to that below.
Those five songs are from the upcoming Joni Mitchell Archives Vol. 2: The Reprise Years (1968 To 1971) box set, which will be out October 29 as a five-CD or 10 vinyl LP set. You can preorder now. Archives Vol 2 also features her February 1, 1969 concert at NYC's Carnegie Hall, appearances on The Dick Cavett Show and the BBC's Top Gear, and more. There's also a booklet featuring unseen photos from Mitchell’s personal collection, as well as new liner notes featuring conversations about the time period between writer/filmmaker Cameron Crowe and Mitchell. You can check out the artwork and tracklist for Archives Vol. 2 below.
Out this week is The Reprise Albums (1968-1971), which features a new mix of her 1968 debut, Song to a Seagull (“The original mix was atrocious,” Mitchell said. “It sounded like it was recorded under a jello bowl, so I fixed it!”), and remasters of 1969’s Clouds, 1970’s Ladies of the Canyon, and Blue.
