Meghan Trainor did all the things you expect a pop star to do when they hop into the car with James Corden for a "Carpool Karaoke" segment. The singer celebrated the release of her new album, Treat Myself, by busting out the hits with Corden on Thursday night (Jan. 30), including "All About That Bass" and "Like I'm Going to Lose You," but she also dished on the meet-too-cute with her husband, actor Daryl Sabara.
"It's so fun and I recommend it to everyone," Trainor said of being married. The singer then described how she met Sabara after being set up on a blind double-date with pal actress Chloe Grace Moritz and Brooklyn Beckham and how the night of bowling went better than she could have ever expected. Describing the grade school scenario in which Beckham told her that she should try to kiss Sabara and Moritz said the same to the actor -- "how old were you at this point, 12?" Corden asked -- Trainor begged them to let her smooch on her own schedule.
"I looked at my security guard like 'be gone.' So that's what gave daryl the cue, 'oh it's going down!," she said with a smile. "That is what I always think of romance," Corden replied with an eye roll. "I remember the first time I kissed my wife... it was only after the security guard had left the bowling alley that I thought 'now is the time to kiss.'" She said Sabara sealed the deal on their next date by singing Elton John's "Your Song" right up in her face. Game over.
Trainor also recalled that even though she's always wanted to be a perfomer, there was a time in her life when a lot of people in her life encouraged her to consider just being a songwriter. "Why do you think that was?" Corden asked. "Because my looks, I looked as insecure as I was," she said, noting that even though she didn't love "All About That Bass" that much, once it was mixed and mastered it set her on her way to stardom on both sides of the mic.
Testing her prodigious songwriting abilities, Corden challenged Trainor to write a spontanous song about traffic. "Beep beep I'm in traffic," she freestyled, busting out a funky little ditty about giving you that "zoom zoom" after she finally makes it out of the car. After a quick trip through her new song "Nice to Meet Ya," James probed Meghan's obsession with TV advice man Dr. Phil. "I worship Dr. Phil," Trainor said, admitting that not only has she seen every episode (multiple times), but she went to a taping recently on her birthday as well. "It was the greatest day of my whole life," she gushed.
The query wasn't idle. Corden tried to distract her with questions about her upcoming tour with Maroon 5, but Trainor let out a glass-shattering shriek when she saw the doc walking up to the car. "Your teeth look so good! You're so handsome!" she kvelled as Phil strapped in and Trainor peppered him with the story of the panic disorder that gripped her as she was recording her new album.
Doc Phil then jumped in for a quick rewind of "Bass" and the trio held hands for an affirmation before the ride wound down with a run through "Funk."
