OG Maco in “critical but stable condition” after alleged suicide attempt

Trap rap pioneer OG Maco is in “critical but stable condition” following an alleged suicide attempt, his family have confirmed.

Over the weekend (December 13), it was reported that OG Maco had been hospitalised due to an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Today (December 16), his family have shared an update on social media regarding his condition.

His family wrote: “We want to inform OG Maco’s fans, friends, and supporters that he is currently in critical but stable condition. He is receiving the best possible care, and we are staying hopeful as he continues to fight.”

They added later in the statement: “Please note, all official updates regarding OG Maco’s health will come directly from his official social media accounts. This will be the only source for valid information.”

The clarification on updates comes after hoax reports from Say Cheese surfaced over the last two days that the rapper had died from his injuries.

It was first reported on December 14 per UpRoxx that OG Maco had been hospitalised due to a gunshot wound to the head earlier last week. iHeartRadio‘s additional reporting claimed that it was a failed suicide attempt, and that the rapper’s neighbour had called the authorities after hearing a gunshot go off.

Speaking to AllHipHop on Thursday (December 12), OG Maco’s manager Poppa Perc confirmed that the rapper had shot himself in the head but was still alive. Poppa Perc’s confirmation also came after rumours began spreading that Maco had died, leading to Three 6 Mafia’s DJ Paul to post a eulogy on social media – the post was shortly deleted after Poppa Perc’s statement to AllHipHop.

In 2016, Maco was involved in a car accident that left him without his right eye. In 2019, he was diagnosed with a flesh-eating disease that has since left him with scars on his face and body.

OG Maco is often credited as a pioneer of trap rap, having been in the scene dating back to 2011. He has released one studio album to date, 2021’s ‘The God Of Rage’. Apart from the album, he has dropped well over 20 EPs and mixtapes dating back to 2011.

Speaking to AllHipHop, his manager Poppa Perc said that Maco was “about rebrand and drop [new music] under a whole new alias”.
