Vashti Bunyan & Devendra Banhart cover Lynn Castle for new Light In The Attic comp

Light in the Attic Records is releasing a new compilation called Light in the Attic & Friends on November 24. Some of its previously released songs include Ethan & Maya Hawke’s Willie Nelson cover, Angel Olsen’s Karen Dalton cover, Mark Lanegan’s traditional/Karen Dalton cover, Mac DeMarco’s Haruomi Hosono cover, Iggy Pop & Zig Zags’ Betty Davis cover, and more, and it also includes some entirely new stuff, like Steve Gunn & Bridge St. John covering Michael Chapman (not yet released) and Vashti Bunyan and Devendra Banhart covering Madelynn Von Ritz, aka Lynn Castle.

Madelynn Von Ritz is a veteran cult hero–like Vashti herself–and her song “How Could You Let Me Go?” was a previously unreleased ’80s recording until Light In The Attic put it out on the You Are The One EP in 2019. Vashti and Devendra take the glammy original and turn it into a somber folk song, the kind that both of them are best known for making together and separately. Listen and compare it to the original below.

Vashti also released her memoir Wayward, Just Another Life to Live earlier this year.
