Sam DeRosa premiered the acoustic version of her single "Pill for This" on Tuesday (March 17), exclusively to Billboard.
Originally featured on NBC's hit songwriting competition series Songland, the rising singer-songwriter strips down the lovelorn mid-tempo bop she once pitched to Charlie Puth.
"I don't wanna be two years done, still messed up halfway over you/ I don't wanna be back to square one 'cause I messed up with someone new/ So what do I do? I learned how to love, not how to get over you," she sings, accompanied by a sole acoustic guitar as she launches into the track's yearning chorus.
"The story around ‘Pill for This’ is about a feeling or a person that you can’t shake," DeRosa, who also pens songs for other artists -- including Lovelytheband’s “Broken" -- tells Billboard. "Isn’t it crazy how we can medicate for almost anything: headaches, sinuses, broken bones, but never for a broken heart? That’s where this song came from."
DeRosa continues, "There are a lot of people who can’t process what they’re feeling, so my responsibility as an artist and songwriter is to speak my truth as best I can with the hopes that it will help someone else who’s hurting."
Following her success on Songland, the Berklee College of Music graduate signed with mentor Shane McAnally's Monument Records/Sony Music Group and has more music expected later this year.
