'70s gospel/soul greats The Staples Jr Singers are getting their rare 1975 album When Do We Get Paid reissued on May 6 via Luaka Bop. Formed in Aberdeen, Mississippi by siblings Annie Brown, Edward Brown and A.R.C. Brown, they named themselves after their favorite band, The Staples Singers, and were still teenagers when they made When Do We Get Paid. The album was sold at their shows, or off their front lawn, and original copies go for north of $500 on the secondary market. It's an album of funky soul that sees a South that had been officially desegregated on paper but much less so in practice. You can listen to four songs off of it below.
To celebrate the reissue, The Staples Jr Singers are reuniting to play their first shows as a family in 40 years, not to mention their first-ever NYC shows, this weekend. They're playing three shows on Saturday, April 23: a gospel brunch at Baby's All Right at 11 AM with a DJ set by L'Rain (free with RSVP), then The Lot Radio at 3 PM which will be broadcast live (free with RSVP), and Friends and Lovers at 7 PM which also features a DJ set by The Dap Kings' Binky Griptite (tickets).
