Lewis Capaldi on How Sam Fender and Grian Chatten Inspired His Creative Evolution

Lewis Capaldi has opened up about the profound influence his friendship with fellow musicians Sam Fender and Fontaines D.C. frontman Grian Chatten has had on his recent creative output. The Scottish singer-songwriter, who returned to the spotlight last November with his EP Survive, credits the pair with helping him refine his artistic approach.

In a recent interview with Billboard, Capaldi shared that the trio—who all reside in north London—frequently exchange music recommendations. This collaborative spirit has introduced him to emerging artists such as Bleech 9:3, Aaron Rowe, and Jacob Alon. Beyond sharing music, Capaldi noted that witnessing his friends' dedication to their craft has been a major catalyst for his own growth.

Reflecting on his experience attending the 2025 Mercury Prize Ceremony, where both Fender and Chatten were nominated, Capaldi explained how their commitment to artistry motivated him to step outside his comfort zone. "[Fender and Chatten] talk about music as art – and I know this sounds fucking mental coming from someone who is also a musician – but they really fucking care about everything they’re putting out," he told the publication.

He added: "It is so inspiring. What they have instilled in me is to really take time [in the studio], and start properly giving a fuck about what I’m saying and what the songs sound like."

The group, who jokingly refer to themselves as "The Syndicate," have been spotted spending time together frequently, including a memorable trip to Mayo, Ireland, last summer. This camaraderie appears to be a cornerstone of Capaldi's current creative phase.

Capaldi is currently preparing for a busy summer, with headline performances scheduled for BST Hyde Park and Roundhay Festival in July 2026. These shows are part of a larger UK and Ireland tour, following a string of high-profile appearances, including a sold-out show at Madison Square Garden and a surprise pop-up concert in New York City.

As he continues his comeback, the singer remains focused on his evolution as a songwriter, clearly energized by the creative standards set by his peers.
