More than 25 years after the acclaimed miniseries Band of Brothers first premiered, actor James McAvoy has opened up about a challenging experience he faced during his early career. McAvoy, who was just 22 years old and fresh out of acting school at the time, appeared in a single episode of the World War II drama, but his introduction to professional television was marred by an encounter with a bully.
During a recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, McAvoy reflected on his first day on set. He described a scene involving a large group of actors gathered in a bar, noting the palpable tension between the long-term cast members and newcomers. According to McAvoy, the established actors had been working on the production for nearly a year, and the arrival of a guest star with a significant arc and dialogue created friction.
A Difficult Professional Debut
"On my first day on set, there was a ton of actors… it was one of those scenes with everybody in it, and we’re all at a bar," McAvoy recalled. "I had a scene. And all these guys were in it for nine months, 10 months, and they get one line in one episode and one line 10 episodes later. They were all pissed. I come in for one episode, and I’ve got an arc and scenes. I’ve got tons of lines."
The situation escalated quickly when one of his co-stars decided to target him. "So, one of the guys in that picture decided to bully me — on my first day as a professional actor out of acting school. He got him and his buddies to just stand pointing at me and laugh at me for like three minutes," he shared.
Finding Support Amidst the Tension
While McAvoy chose not to name the specific individual responsible for the harassment, he did clarify that it was not David Schwimmer, nor was the person featured in the promotional cast photo shown during the program. Despite the hostility from some, the experience was not entirely negative. McAvoy noted that other cast members, specifically Dexter Fletcher and Robin Laing, recognized the unfair treatment and stepped in to support him.
Reflecting on the overall production, McAvoy maintained a balanced perspective. "I’d say apart from that day, my Band of Brothers experience was a nine. But that day it felt like a two," he admitted. The miniseries, which follows the men of Easy Company, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, remains a landmark project in television history, featuring a sprawling cast that included Scott Grimes, Damian Lewis, and Ron Livingston.
