Following the announcement that Sebastian Bach will step in to handle vocal duties for Twisted Sister on their upcoming reunion tour, guitarist Jay Jay French has addressed the mixed reception from the band's fanbase. With the group marking their 50th anniversary and their first return to the stage in a decade, the decision to recruit the former Skid Row frontman has sparked debate among long-time supporters.
The band was forced to pivot after original vocalist Dee Snider, who has battled degenerative arthritis for several years, was unable to commit to the rigorous demands of a full tour. In a recent interview on Rock 'N' Blues Experience, French defended the choice, describing Bach as the only individual with the necessary pedigree and stage presence to fill such a significant role. "He's the only larger-than-life guy with the chops and the stage presence to do it," French stated, noting that rehearsals have left him confident in the band's upcoming performances.
The Verdict of the Fans
Addressing concerns from fans who feel the band should not continue without Snider, French emphasized that the ultimate success of the venture lies with the audience. "It's either gonna work, or it's not gonna work," he said. "The public buys it or they don't buy it."
French drew parallels to other legendary acts that have successfully navigated lineup changes, such as Queen, who continue to tour with Adam Lambert, and Journey, who famously discovered Arnel Pineda via YouTube. "I'm just saying, we got a guy whose pedigree is metal, who's a legitimate artist with platinum records. A phenomenally talented human being. And, of course, now the public is gonna ultimately decide. They decide. If the public likes it, they like it."
Clarifying Health Concerns
The transition comes after significant public concern regarding Snider's health. Following the initial tour cancellation, rumors circulated that the frontman was in critical condition. Snider has since clarified his situation, stating that while he is not on his "deathbed," he is no longer capable of the physical intensity required for touring. He remains active in other creative pursuits, including his radio show, writing, and directing, while stepping back from the road to prioritize his well-being.
