Paul Weller, Madness and More Set for London Artists for Gaza Gig

A host of legendary musicians, including Paul Weller, Madness, and Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie, are set to take the stage at London’s Scala this Sunday, May 17, for the latest 'Artists for Gaza' fundraiser. The event aims to generate vital support for the Health Workers 4 Palestine’s Gaza Medics Solidarity Fund, which provides essential aid, including the reconstruction of maternity wards and the funding of mobile clinics for medics in the region.

The upcoming concert follows two previous successful events that raised over £55,000 for UNICEF’s Gaza appeal. This year’s edition promises a unique collaborative performance featuring Paul Weller, Sex Pistols bassist Glen Matlock, and members of Madness, including Suggs, Barso, Bedders, and Lee Thompson. They will be joined by Roxy Music saxophonist Andy Mackay, Kevin Rowland, and Clive Langer of Deaf School.

A Collective Stand for Humanitarian Aid

Reflecting on his involvement, Bobby Gillespie emphasized the urgency of the cause. "I believe it’s the human rights issue of our time," he stated. "A grave historical injustice has been done to the Palestinian people. Our government are complicit in the genocide prosecuted by Israel. I support the Palestinian people’s struggle for equal rights and justice."

Dexys Midnight Runners founder Kevin Rowland echoed these sentiments, adding, "I want to play Artists for Gaza because it’s my duty as a human being to do whatever I possibly can. Innocent people are being slaughtered and our government don’t care."

The event will also feature an extensive roster of DJs, including The Specials founder Jerry Dammers, Gilles Peterson, and Primal Scream frontman Bobby Gillespie. Live sets are scheduled from acid jazz band Galliano, Natty Bo and the Top Cats, and The Black Kat Boppers, among others.

A Memorial and a Movement

This year’s concert holds deep personal significance, as it will be held in memory of Finbar Sullivan, the son of event founder Chris Sullivan and Leah Seresin, who passed away in April. Finbar was a dedicated supporter of the initiative from its inception, and the concert serves as a fitting tribute to his commitment to the cause.

The collaboration between these artists is not new; in 2024, Paul Weller and Bobby Gillespie joined forces with Kneecap for a 'Gig For Gaza' at the O2 Academy Brixton. Both artists have consistently used their platforms to advocate for humanitarian aid and freedom of expression, with Paul Weller previously performing with a Palestinian flag and Primal Scream supporting refugee football initiatives.
