RAYE says “no second album any time soon”

RAYE has told her fans her long-awaited second album isn’t coming “any time soon”.

She explained the delay in the follow-up to last year’s ‘My 21st Century Blues’ on Instagram, writing: “It’s my birthday and my car got stolen with all my song writing books in the boot so no second album any time soon love you bye.”

In the post, she shared pictures of a cake iced to say “sorry ur car got stolen” another that read goes “Happy Birthday Raye” and one with 27 candles and a Mario Kart cake topper – having previously revealed she was a “hardcore” Mario fan and was considering “getting a 1-Up mushroom tattooed on my arm”.

Speaking to NME about her debut album last year at the Mercury prize, she said recognition for her work was something she wanted “for a really long time”.

“It really feels like people have taken the time to dig into this album and I know that this shortlist will bring even more ears to people who have never heard it or heard of me,” she said. “It’s growth, it’s stepping stones, but it’s also just ridiculously unexpected. You know, all of the positive words in the dictionary listed here.”

A key element of RAYE’s rise to success was the Number One single ‘Escapism‘ from the record – which went on to become the second-biggest songs of 2023.

“I’ll take that!” said RAYE at the time. “My goal is that before I die, I want to create things that stand the test of time and live on once I’m not here anymore. Maybe that’s a little taste of that, maybe that’s a bit big-headed to say, but at the end of the day having music that people are listening to is the goal.

Since her debut, her only proper release since has been ‘Genesis‘, which arrived in June. The multi-BRIT Award-winning singer-songwriter previewed the track live at a special pop-up exhibition in New York City earlier this week, saying she was “so proud” of how it had turned out.
