The legendary Britpop band Oasis have seemingly given their seal of approval to Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, granting him permission to use their iconic track ‘Some Might Say’ in a new by-election campaign video. The clip, which debuted on Monday, May 18, features the classic anthem as the backdrop for Burnham’s pitch to return to Westminster.
The politician, who has served as the Mayor of Greater Manchester since 2017, is currently the Labour candidate for the upcoming Makerfield by-election scheduled for June 18. Through this campaign, he aims to return to Parliament and challenge current Prime Minister Keir Starmer for the leadership of the Labour Party.
In the four-minute video, Burnham retraces his roots in Ashton-in-Makerfield, highlighting his personal connection to the area before showcasing various parts of Manchester, including St Peter’s Square and the Gay Village. He addresses the current political climate, stating, “Politics isn’t working for places like ours. I will change that.”

The video begins with Elbow’s anthem ‘One Day Like This’ before transitioning into the Oasis classic. The clip concludes with a poignant shot as Liam Gallagher sings the line: “We will find a brighter day.”
Burnham has long maintained a supportive relationship with the Gallagher brothers. In 2024, he expressed his excitement regarding the band's massive Live ‘25 reunion tour, noting his history of working with both Noel Gallagher and Liam on various city initiatives, including fundraising for homelessness and supporting local music conferences.
Beyond his personal affinity for the band, Burnham has been a vocal advocate for the UK’s music industry. He has consistently pushed for greater support for grassroots venues and talent development, recently applauding artists like Coldplay for implementing ticket levies to save independent music spaces. As he looks toward the Makerfield by-election, Burnham continues to emphasize his commitment to the cultural and economic vitality of Manchester.
