Fans have vented their frustration after the Fugees' set was cut short at Lauryn Hill's Diaspora Calling! festival at Milton Keynes National Bowl. The event, which took place on Friday (August 7), saw the iconic group reunite alongside Wyclef Jean, Erykah Badu, and Giggs.
However, the performance was brought to an abrupt halt. The group arrived onstage at 10pm BST, but the venue was forced to end the concert early due to strict licensing restrictions that prohibited any activity past 11pm. According to reports, the pair attempted to address the crowd before their microphones were switched off.
Moments later, a message appeared on the stage screens: "THANK YOU EVERYONE. We're sorry for the abrupt finish. As part of our licence we are legally required to finish the show at 11pm and cannot continue beyond this time."
Wyclef Jean later expressed his regret regarding the situation, telling The Sun: “We’re really sad how it ended. We was just getting started, so we’re hoping to continue next year.” He emphasized the spirit of the event, noting, “We had so much surprises on the line up and everybody showed up and we really felt the crowd, that love and that energy.”
The reaction from the audience was largely negative, with many taking to social media to voice their disappointment. One attendee on Reddit remarked, "The ending was ridiculous and spoiled the whole experience for me. It was meant to be 30th anniversary of the album and all we got is DJ set and like 2 tracks from the score."
The Fugees, consisting of Hill, Jean, and Pras Michel, remain one of the most influential hip-hop acts of the 1990s. Despite their legacy, the group has faced a tumultuous history, including a cancelled 2024 tour and legal disputes involving Pras Michel. While Hill and Jean have continued to perform together, the abrupt conclusion to their latest festival appearance has left many fans questioning the organization of the event.
