Jeff Mills Reinterprets Rembrandt’s ‘De Nachtwacht’ at the Rijksmuseum

Audio Obscura has unveiled a groundbreaking new film featuring Detroit techno pioneer Jeff Mills, who offers a unique artistic interpretation of Rembrandt’s iconic painting, ‘De Nachtwacht’ (The Night Watch). Produced at the prestigious Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, this ambitious project is set to premiere during the 30th edition of the Amsterdam Dance Event.

The film moves beyond the traditional concept of a DJ set, instead inviting the artist to engage in a deep, creative dialogue with one of history’s most celebrated works of art. An exclusive, invitation-only premiere is scheduled for Wednesday, October 21st, in the museum’s Gallery of Honour, with public screenings following from October 22nd to 25th in the Rijksmuseum auditorium.

An Immersive Artistic Narrative

Rather than utilizing the painting merely as a backdrop, the project—conceived by the team at Audio Obscura—challenges Mills to respond to the artwork through his own lens. The techno legend developed an imagined narrative centered on the arrival of Marie de' Medici, using her historical role as a patron of the arts as a catalyst for his composition and choreography.

The film is structured into three distinct sections. It begins with Mills performing behind the decks, followed by a sequence featuring dancer Sophie Boursier, who embodies a figure from the artist's imagined narrative in front of the painting. The experience concludes with a return to a live performance, ultimately drawing the viewer's focus back to the original masterpiece.

Bridging Electronic Music and Visual Art

Directed by Hans Pannecoucke, the production fluidly transitions between the canvas, the surrounding gallery space, and the performers, effectively weaving together electronic music, movement, and visual art. Reflecting on the collaboration, Mills noted, “It was a great pleasure to create, explore, and perform in the presence of Rembrandt’s The Night Watch. The painting is an incredible source of inspiration and invites you to look, think and imagine in a different way.”

Jeroen Fontein, co-founder and managing director of Audio Obscura, emphasized the intentionality behind the collaboration: “We didn't ask Jeff Mills to play a DJ set with De Nachtwacht as a backdrop. We asked him to study the painting and respond to it as an artist. He built an entire world around it, from the music and dance to the way viewers approach the work.”

This project continues Audio Obscura’s ongoing mission to bridge the gap between electronic music and significant cultural or architectural landmarks, following previous high-profile productions at Amsterdam Central Station and the A10 motorway.
