Veteran musician Billy Bragg has doubled down on his criticism of Ed Sheeran following the recent fallout surrounding Macklemore being dropped from the ‘Loop’ tour due to his pro-Palestine comments. The ongoing Ed Sheeran tour controversy has sparked intense debate within the music industry, with Bragg arguing that the singer risked “tarnishing” his career by failing to take a stronger stand against venue owners dictating artist expression.

In an Instagram post shared ahead of Sheeran’s performance at Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field, Bragg expressed that he was “not impressed” by the singer’s attempt to deflect criticism through a $2 million donation to aid in the Middle East. “It’s not just the ambiguity around the phrase itself, which hopes to avoid offending anyone by cloaking the sentiment in vagueness,” Bragg wrote. “It’s the idea that you can buy back your integrity.”

Bragg suggested that instead of focusing on financial gestures, Sheeran should have stood by his fellow artist. He argued that if Sheeran had threatened to showcase Macklemore’s protest track ‘Hind’s Hall’ in response to venue pressure, he would have been viewed as a champion of free speech rather than a “hapless wimp.”

Following the initial backlash, Sheeran addressed the controversy during his Philadelphia show, acknowledging that he had been forced to make “difficult decisions” and admitting, “I am making mistakes, and I’m so, so sorry.” He further noted that he was “listening and learning” regarding the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The situation escalated after all of Sheeran’s remaining support acts and his backing band withdrew from the tour in solidarity with Macklemore. Other prominent figures, including Roger Waters and Damon Albarn, have also weighed in on the matter, emphasizing the importance of taking a clear stance in the face of global conflict.
