Mastodon have officially announced their first studio album in five years, Marrow Deep, accompanied by the release of a blistering new single, 'Snakes For Dinner', which features a guest vocal appearance from Josh Homme. The long-awaited record is scheduled for an August 28 release via Loma Vista Recordings.
This new chapter for the Atlanta heavy metal band marks a significant milestone, as it is their first full-length effort since the 2021 release of Hushed and Grim. The album also represents a period of transition for the group, featuring guitarist Nick Johnston and significant contributions from keyboardist João Nogueira. According to a press release, the band members—Brann Dailor, Troy Sanders, and Bill Kelliher—have channeled years of personal upheaval into a project defined by a renewed sense of purpose.
A New Era for Mastodon
Drawing thematic inspiration from the Three Fates of Greek mythology, Marrow Deep promises to be an intense exploration of the band's recent experiences. Bassist and vocalist Troy Sanders expressed his enthusiasm for the current state of the band, noting, “Bill, Brann, and myself are thrilled that we still have the opportunity to do this, and we've got other members who are just over the moon to be in the band with us. It’s reminiscent of the very beginning of our band, where all members are hungry, we're united, and excited to get to work.”
The lead single, 'Snakes For Dinner', sees Josh Homme of Queens Of The Stone Age return to the Mastodon fold for the first time since his contribution to 2006’s Blood Mountain. The track is accompanied by an official music video featuring the frontman.
Touring and Legacy
In addition to the album announcement, the band has confirmed a North American tour for this autumn, with support from Deafheaven and Alcest. This follows a busy summer of festival appearances, including a performance at Download Festival. The band continues to navigate the future following the tragic death of former guitarist Brent Hinds last August.
