The photograph was captured by Newcastle-based photographer Neil Ferry, 56, during rehearsals for Healy’s appearance at the Sunday For Sammy charity event in February. Ferry, who only began his photography journey at age 48, managed to secure the shot in a matter of minutes, focusing on light, tone, and texture to distance the work from typical promotional imagery.

Capturing a Moment of Authenticity

Reflecting on the brief encounter, Ferry noted that the musician was visibly tired from his rigorous rehearsal schedule. Rather than detracting from the image, this weariness became the focal point. "I loved the fact that he was a bit weary; I just think it really makes the photo," Ferry explained. The portrait is one of three submissions from the photographer currently under consideration for the awards, with winners set to be announced on November 1.

The Sunday For Sammy event, which supports creative talent in the North East of England, holds personal significance for the Healy family, as Matty’s father, actor Tim Healy, is a founder of the charity. The event has become a staple for local music and culture, often featuring high-profile performances.

Looking Ahead for The 1975

Beyond the accolades for his portrait, Matty Healy remains busy with the future of his band. The 1975 have confirmed that they are currently working on new material, with potential plans for two upcoming albums. Following the success of their 2022 record Being Funny In A Foreign Language, fans are eagerly awaiting the next chapter from the group.
