Noel Gallagher, Johnny Marr, and More Sign Open Letter Supporting Garvaghy Road Residents

A prominent group of cultural figures, including Noel Gallagher, Johnny Marr, Kneecap, and Paul Weller, have united to sign an open letter in support of the residents of Garvaghy Road in Belfast. This collective action highlights growing concerns over the recent decision to permit an Orange Order parade to march through the area, a move that has sparked significant tension and fears of renewed conflict.

The Garvaghy Road, located in Portadown, County Armagh, has been at the center of a tense deadlock for over a week. For the past 28 years, the Parades Commission had restricted the Orange Order from using this route due to a history of severe violence, including a tragic incident involving the death of three young brothers. However, a recent High Court ruling has eased these regulations, allowing the march to proceed under specific conditions.

Calls for International Mediation

In response to the decision, residents have actively protested to overturn the ruling, while First Minister Michelle O’Neill has urged Northern Ireland Secretary Sir Chris Bryant to intervene. The open letter addressed to Bryant calls for an "independent international mediator from outside Ireland and Britain" to be appointed to resolve the ongoing debate and ensure the safety of the local community.

"The residents of the Garvaghy Road endured years of profound trauma, fear, and disruption during the height of the parading conflicts in the 1990s," the letter states. "After nearly three decades of hard-earned calm, it is entirely unacceptable that this community should face a return to that anxiety."

A Broad Coalition of Support

The appeal has garnered support from a diverse array of artists and public figures. Beyond the aforementioned musicians, the list of signatories includes Imelda May, Massive Attack’s Robert Del Naja, and Suggs. Actors such as Susan Sarandon, Maxine Peake, and Adrian Dunbar have also lent their voices to the cause, emphasizing the importance of protecting the residents' right to live in peace.

The letter concludes by urging political leaders to exercise "courageous political leadership" and look toward the international community for a neutral arbiter. By doing so, the signatories hope to guide all parties toward a shared and peaceful future, preventing a return to the instability that once defined the region.
