Suede have officially announced plans for a comprehensive 30th-anniversary reissue of their landmark 1996 album, Coming Up. The release, which also includes a dedicated 12-inch singles collection, marks a significant celebration of the record that solidified the band's status as Britpop icons.
The album, which served as the band's third studio effort, famously reached Number One on the UK Albums Chart and produced five hit singles. It also marked a pivotal creative shift for the group, serving as their first full-length project featuring guitarist Richard Oakes following the departure of Bernard Butler. Reflecting on the era, Oakes noted: “You’re at your most creative in a band if you’ve got something to kick against and Coming Up was us doing that. It was like, ‘No, we’re not done. Just you watch’.”
A Deep Dive into the Reissue
Set for release on September 25 via Demon Music, the anniversary edition will be available across multiple formats, including a 5CD deluxe box set, half-speed mastered black vinyl, and various coloured vinyl editions. The package features restored artwork, B-sides, BBC sessions, and new stereo mixes by Steven Wilson. Additionally, the digital edition will include instrumental mixes, with Atmos and 5.1 surround sound versions available on Blu-ray.
To celebrate the announcement, the band has shared a rare BBC recording of “Beautiful Ones,” captured during a 1996 performance for Mark Radcliffe’s BBC Radio 1 Evening Session.
The original music video for the track has also been remastered in high definition.
Looking to the Future
Despite the focus on their past, frontman Brett Anderson remains firmly committed to the band's present. In a recent interview, he emphasized that Suede is not a nostalgia act. “The last thing I ever wanted Suede to be was a nostalgia act,” Anderson stated. “I’ve always felt like we’re out on our own. I felt like we were out on our own in ‘92, when no one wanted to sing about British life, and we were the only people doing it.”
In addition to the Coming Up celebrations, the band is preparing for a co-headline tour with Manic Street Preachers, beginning in Glasgow this October. Fans can also look forward to a 12-inch singles collection, which kicks off with a 30th-anniversary pressing of “Trash” on August 14.
