Temples have unveiled their latest single, 'Vendetta', a track that signals a bold shift in the band's sonic trajectory. By blending their signature psych-rock foundations with the pulsating energy of electronic music icons such as Daft Punk and Justice, the Kettering four-piece continues to push the boundaries of their creative output.
A Modern Take on Dance Music
'Vendetta' serves as a pivotal moment in the lead-up to the band's forthcoming album, Bliss, which is scheduled for release on June 26 via V2. The track is characterized by its infectious, dancefloor-ready melody, punctuated by distorted, scuzzy riffs and driving synth lines. Frontman James Bagshaw delivers a vocal performance that balances grit with a sense of urgency, perfectly capturing the song's thematic tension.
Reflecting on the track's development, Bagshaw noted that the song emerged from the fusion of two distinct musical ideas. “Suddenly, you had this almost Justice-Daft Punk-sounding sample that then goes into something that could be a modern take on dance music,” he explained, citing influences ranging from David Guetta to Avicii.
Pushing Beyond Tropes
The transition toward electronic textures is a deliberate evolution for the band. Following the success of 2023’s Exotico, the group felt a strong desire to move away from their established patterns. This new chapter draws inspiration from legendary electronic acts including Massive Attack, Underworld, and Portishead.
“For us, it’s all about the purity of the idea and the creative vision,” Bagshaw said regarding the recording process. “This is pure Temples, more than records we’ve produced ourselves before because we really haven’t thought about how it’s going to be received. That’s incredibly liberating.”
As the band prepares for their upcoming UK headline tour, including a highly anticipated performance at London’s Scala, it is clear that Temples are not merely revisiting their past. Instead, they are embracing a new, experimental identity that prioritizes instinct over expectation.
