Josh Sanders, a former finalist on the popular NBC singing competition show The Voice, has been arrested on outstanding warrants tied to traffic violations.
According to reports, the 38-year-old singer also faced a charge alleging he obstructed a police officer. Sanders was taken into custody by Kannapolis, North Carolina, police and booked into the Cabarrus County jail on Saturday, August 29.
The arrest occurs amidst an ongoing custody battle between the musician and his wife, Kendra, from whom he has been separated since early winter. Within the legal proceedings, Kendra has alleged that Sanders struggled with alcohol consumption, drove their children while intoxicated, and exhibited violent behavior in their presence. Sanders has vehemently denied these claims, asserting that his wife is interfering with his parental relationship and stating that he remains committed to fighting for custody of their three children.
Two years ago, during the 25th season of The Voice, Sanders achieved significant recognition as the runner-up to Asher HaVon. Both artists were members of Reba McEntire's team. Sanders, known for his country music style, initially impressed coaches during the blind auditions with his rendition of Nate Smith’s “Whiskey On You,” which prompted both McEntire and the duo Dan + Shay to compete for his participation.
Throughout his tenure on the show, Sanders delivered several notable performances, including covers of Luke Combs’ “When it Rains it Pours,” the Doobie Brothers’ “Black Waters,” and Chris Stapleton’s “White Horse.” His performance of the Combs track was particularly impactful, moving his coach, McEntire, to tears. In the season finale, the pair shared the stage for a duet of McEntire’s “Back to God.”
Sanders' legal situation comes just weeks before the 30th season premiere of The Voice, scheduled for September 21. The upcoming season will feature a refreshed coaching panel, with veterans Adam Levine and Kelly Clarkson joined by newcomers Riley Green and Queen Latifah.
