The Strokes Announce First New Album in Six Years, ‘Reality Awaits’

The long-standing drought for fans of The Strokes is finally coming to an end. It has been nearly six years since the band released their acclaimed record, The New Abnormal, on April 10, 2020. Today, the group officially confirmed that their follow-up project, titled Reality Awaits, is scheduled to arrive this summer.

The announcement was made via a brief, 13-second video clip that channels the aesthetic of a vintage car advertisement. The teaser features a snippet of what appears to be new music, characterized by an '80s-inspired soundscape that hints at the sonic direction of the upcoming record.

While the formal announcement is fresh, the band has been signaling their return for some time. Over the past several months, The Strokes have been confirmed for a string of high-profile festival appearances throughout 2026, including slots at Bonnaroo, Shaky Knees, and Sea.Hear.Now, suggesting that the group is fully prepared to return to the spotlight.

The news follows a period of speculation regarding the band's future, particularly after frontman Julian Casablancas discussed his work with his side project, The Voidz, in a 2024 interview. When asked about his perspective on The Strokes and whether he felt he was creating an "opiate-of-the-masses" vibe, Casablancas offered a nuanced take on his commitment to the band:

"No, because I think I put political thoughts now in Strokes songs, too. I always have to some degree. I definitely think a lot of Strokes fans don't get that about it so much, which is maybe why I've kind of stepped away a little bit. But it's a very cool day job that I'm honored to have, so I don't feel negatively about it. If it was wasting so much of my time that I couldn't do anything positive, then I would. But I don't let it get to that point. At least I don't think so. I could be lying to myself."

With Reality Awaits now on the horizon, fans can look forward to seeing how the band balances their signature sound with the evolving creative vision of their lead singer.
