Legendary guitarist Tom Morello, best known for his groundbreaking work with Rage Against the Machine, has officially announced the cancellation of two upcoming concert appearances. The musician, who has been actively touring throughout the UK and Europe, is returning to the United States to prioritize the health of his 102-year-old mother, Mary Morello.
This difficult decision marks the second time this month that the 62-year-old artist has paused his tour to attend to his mother's health. Morello shared the news via his Instagram account on Thursday, June 25, expressing his gratitude to his international fanbase while emphasizing the necessity of his return home.
“‘Dear friends, fans and comrades, my dear mom, Mary Morello is back in the hospital and I’m headed home to help look after her,’” wrote Morello. “‘Rocking the UK & Europe with you all this summer has been incredible and I can’t wait to be back with and continue this movement that we started. With much love, unity and power’ – Tom Morello.”
The cancellation affects his scheduled performances at the Tons of Rock Festival in Norway and the BBK Music Legends Festival in Spain. Organizers have confirmed that refunds will be available for ticket holders. In Norway, The Hellacopters are set to fill the vacancy, while the band That Beat will extend their set at the BBK Festival to compensate for the change in the lineup.
Beyond his iconic tenure with Rage Against the Machine, Morello has maintained a prolific career as a member of Prophets of Rage and Audioslave. He also remains a consistent presence in the media landscape, hosting a weekly program on SiriusXM’s Lithium channel, where his mother has frequently appeared as a guest. Earlier this year, Morello was also noted for his collaborative touring efforts with Bruce Springsteen.
Looking ahead, Morello remains focused on his upcoming Power To The People Festival, scheduled for October 3 in Maryland. The event, which promises a day of “peace, love, justice, and music,” is expected to feature a star-studded lineup including Bruce Springsteen, Serj Tankian, and the Foo Fighters.
