Sky Ferreira has covered Lady A‘s ‘Need You Now’ at a surprise Coachella appearance on Saturday – watch below.
The singer, who has just finished her UK/EU tour, popped up at the Californian festival to play an unnanounced opening song for Kevin Abstract that afternoon, to the delight of fans.
Ferreira’s cover is a starry, synth-drenched version that is characteristic of her 80s synthpop-inflected instrumentals. Her cover was later revealed to be produced by Quadeca, who joined Abstract later on stage along with Dominic Fike.
‘Need You Now’ was originally released in 2009, where it went on to win four Grammys in 2011, including Song of the Year and Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.

NME spoke with Ferreira last year, where she revealed that her highly anticipated second album ‘Masochism’ was nearly done. “It’s basically done for the most part, it’s just that some parts need to be re-recorded,” she said. “Just the finishing touches, really.”

Initially set for release in 2015, ‘Masochism’ has been pushed back multiple times since. Ferreira first confirmed a release date for the album in October 2021, saying it would materialise in March 2022.
However, when the album didn’t materialise in March, Ferreira told fans to hold off on their “wrath and death threats” until the following month. ‘Masochism’ has not been released since, though Ferreira released ‘Don’t Forget’ in May 2022, her first song since 2019’s ‘Downhill Lullaby’.
In other news, fans flew a “Free Sky Ferreira” banner over Capitol Records in their latest protest in September 2023; two months later, Ferreira was removed from the label’s website.
