Last year, as part of Billboard's Black History Month celebration, we asked Black artists spanning all genres to compile unique playlists exclusive to Billboard's Spotify account. Everyone from Normani and Khalid to DJ Premier and& Rapsody shared tracks that represented their love for the culture across the diaspora -- from childhood favorites to songs that make them feel free. We continue the celebration in 2020, with Victoria Monét sharing her soundtrack today.
Victoria Monét is a singer and songwriter who celebrates being a queer Black artist and explores feminism and sexuality through her music. The Grammy-nominted musician -- who has written for artists including friend and collaborator Ariana Grande, as well as T.I. and Nas -- dives into some of her favorite tracks on her playlist below:
1. Marvin Gaye, "Let’s Get It On"
This song may be one reason why a lot of us were even born. [Laughs.] So it deserves its praise!
2. Brandy and Monica, "The Boy Is Mine"
This was the most important and successful collaboration between two Black women in music, and I was lucky enough to witness it in my time. It was also produced and written by people of color! This song is definitely a huge, unforgettable staple in the history of Black music.
3. New Edition, "Can You Stand the Rain"
You can’t hear this song without singing the [catchy] hook. Try it!
4. Cameo, "Candy"
This will get the dance floor hype at any Black wedding, cookout, or family reunion! It feels so good, and it’s a cultural must-play.
5. Chaka Khan, "Through the Fire"
This song had a life of its own when it was first released [in 1984], and was reborn in sample form with [Kanye West's 2004 single "Through the Wire"! It’s a huge goal of mine to have music classic enough for a couple of rebirths and lifetimes. I love this song.
Following singles such as "Ass Like That" as well as "Monopoly" alongside Grande, Monét ushered in 2020 with her latest release -- the seductive, psychedelic R&B slow jam "Moment."
