Canadian rock duo Death From Above 1979 have officially announced their highly anticipated new studio album, Private Lives. Marking their first full-length release in six years, the record is set to arrive on January 29 via Last Gang/MNRK. To celebrate the announcement, the band has also unveiled a sprawling North American tour scheduled for the spring of 2027.
The upcoming LP follows the band's 2021 effort, Is 4 Lovers. According to members Sebastien Grainger and Jesse F. Keeler, the creative spark for Private Lives was ignited by a series of retrospective performances, including tours celebrating the 20th anniversary of their seminal debut, You’re a Woman, I’m a Machine, and the 10th anniversary of their sophomore album, The Physical World.
A Return to Foundational Sound
“Playing the old songs every day really inspires you to want to make something new,” Keeler noted regarding the band's creative process. Grainger added, “After the anniversary shows, we were at once kinda sick of celebrating ourselves but also re-grounded in the true foundational sound of the band.”
The album is largely composed of previously unused demos that the duo has unearthed and revitalized. Grainger described the recording process as a return to the band's roots: “When we first started making music, it was as easy as going down to the basement. It was a physical process. The trick is to remember what makes it fun and special. Our band has always been a balance of sweet and sour.”
“Ultimately though, it’s just a ripping rock song with maniacal riffs. Our new 10-song LP, Private Lives, represents a renewed commitment to the pure industrial magic of electricity.”
The title track, which serves as the album's lead single, is available now. The accompanying music video features actor Kim Bodnia and was directed by Eva Michon. The 10-track album also includes a notable collaboration with the band CSS.
2027 North American Tour Dates
The band will hit the road in February 2027, kicking off the tour in Tempe, Arizona, before making stops in major cities including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Brooklyn, and Seattle. The tour concludes in late March.
