Fox to Reboot Classic ’80s Series ‘Highway to Heaven’

Fox to Reboot Classic '80s Series 'Highway to Heaven'

Get ready for another dose of nostalgia. As Fox prepares to launch its Baywatch reboot, the network is officially bringing back another classic television series, Highway to Heaven.

According to reports, Fox has ordered a new take on the Michael Landon classic, with writer-producer Jason Katims—known for his work on acclaimed series like Friday Night Lights and Parenthood—spearheading the project for the 2027-28 season.

The upcoming reboot is envisioned as a contemporary reimagining of the original series. The production aims to preserve the uplifting, emotional storytelling and core themes of compassion, humanity, and second chances that defined the original show. The premise will remain centered on a “probationary angel” sent to Earth to earn his wings by assisting those in need.

Katims expressed his enthusiasm for the project, noting the challenge of applying a modern lens to such a beloved tale. “The idea of telling a very grounded, human story about an angel feels immediately emotional to me—and fun,” Katims said. “I love going outside my comfort zone to tell a tale about someone trying to do better as an angel than he did as a man.”

This move aligns with Fox’s recent shift toward feel-good, character-driven programming. The network has seen success with similar series like Doc, Murder In a Small Town, and Best Medicine. Given Katims’ history of crafting emotionally resonant dramas, the network is banking on his ability to capture the spirit of the original while appealing to a new generation of viewers.

The new Highway to Heaven will be executive produced by Katims, who will also serve as showrunner. The production team includes Amblin Television’s Darryl Frank, Justin Falvey, and Todd Cohen, alongside Mark Itkin and Michael Landon Productions’ Cindy Landon and Wayne Lepoff.

The original series, created by Michael Landon, ran on NBC for five seasons from 1984 to 1989. It starred Landon as Jonathan Smith, an angel on probation, alongside Victor French, who played his loyal companion, Mark Gordan. While fans will have to wait until the 2027 TV season for this new journey, the network’s Baywatch reboot is expected to arrive during the 2026-2027 season.
