Ryan Hurst Reunites With ‘Sons of Anarchy’ Creator for Netflix Show ‘The Abandons’

A Sons of Anarchy reunion is happening on a new Netflix show. Variety reports that Ryan Hurst, who portrayed Opie in the first five seasons of the FX drama, has been cast in the new Western series The Abandons from Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter. Although details surrounding Hurst's character are unknown, he is going to be recurring in the new series. Sutter also serves as showrunner and executive producer under his Sutter Ink banner alongside Emmy Grwinsis, Jon Paré, Otto Bathurst, and Stephen Surjik.

The Abandons was first announced in 2021. It follows a group of diverse, outlier families pursuing their Manifest Destiny in 1850s Oregon, where "a corrupt force of wealth and power, coveting their land, tries to force them out. These abandoned souls, the kind of lost souls living on the fringe of society, unite their tribes to form a family and fight back. In this bloody process, 'justice' is stretched beyond the boundaries of the law."

Hurst is not the only one who was just cast on The Abandons. Michael Greyeyes, Michiel Huisman, and Toby Hemingway were all cast in recurring roles, joining the previously announced star-studded lineup that includes Lena Headey, Gillian Anderson, Lucas Till, Nick Robinson, and Diana Silvers. As of now, it's unknown when the series will premiere, but production was pushed back last year due to the strikes, with filming only just kicking off very recently.

Aside from Sons of Anarchy, Ryan Hurst can also be seen in Remember the Titans, Saving Private Ryan, Wanted, King & Maxwell, Outsiders, Bates Motel, The Walking Dead, and The Mysterious Benedict Society, among many others. It's going to be exciting to see Hurst in this new series and reuniting with Kurt Sutter. Hopefully, this means that more Sons of Anarchy reunions are on the way, whether on The Abandons or another project.

With production starting on The Abandons, more information on the Netflix Western series should be announced in the coming months. The wait will surely be worth it since it already sounds interesting, on top of the fact that the cast list is a pretty big one, both with the main cast and recurring. In the meantime, fans can always watch Sons of Anarchy and its spinoff Mayans M.C. on Hulu to keep occupied until The Abandons releases.
