Nine months after Eric Dane passed away amid his battle with ALS, the late actor’s wife, Rebecca Gayheart, is reflecting on his diagnosis and the profound impact it had on their family. While appearing on Today, the actress spoke candidly about the loss of her husband, admitting that the family never anticipated his passing in February.
Gayheart recalled the moment she first learned of Dane’s ALS diagnosis in 2024. Her immediate concern was for their two daughters, Billie and Georgia. “The first thing I thought about was just my daughters losing their father and how that was going to be on them,” she shared. “And then I thought, ‘OK, what do we have to do?'”
Despite filing for divorce in 2018, the couple never finalized their split, and Gayheart remained a steadfast support system for Dane throughout his illness. “We were together for so long; we created two beautiful daughters,” she explained. “It just wasn’t even a question. Of course we were gonna be there, as a family, with him to go through this.”
Gayheart noted that the diagnosis brought a shift in Dane’s perspective. “Something definitely was awakened in him when he was diagnosed that I think he really never felt before,” she said. “He became a different person, in a way. He really valued his life suddenly and every minute of how he was going to spend his life.”
Describing the situation as both “a gift and a curse,” Gayheart shared that Dane was finally relieved of the mental anguish he had carried throughout his life. As for her daughters, she emphasized that while the loss is tremendous, she hopes they carry forward his legacy by advocating for their own happiness and mental health. “They have a lot of Eric in them,” she added. “I think they got all the best parts.”
